Peru offers national dog to Obama

Tuesday Nov 11, 2008

Peru’s national dog is a hairless and often toothless breed owned in history by the Incan kings. Some proud Peruvians have offered to send a hypoallergenic pup to the Obamas, since the First family that will soon be moving in the White House has to follow tradition of keeping a dog.

Obama has promised his daughters a new pet but one of his daughters is allergic to most breeds, he said Friday while speculating the type of dog that they would choose.

The hairless Peruvian breed can be dated back to 3,000 years and is often depicted in Hispanic murals and ceramics and due to its lack of hair, it is tolerable for people that have allergies. Read the rest of this entry »

Gun sales boom after Obama win

Friday Nov 7, 2008

Gun enthusiasts nationwide are stocking up on firearms out of fears that the combination of an Obama administration and a Democrat-dominated Congress will result in tough new gun laws.

“I think they’re going to really try to crack down on guns and make it harder for people to try to purchase them,” said Smith, 32, who taught all five of her children — ages 4 to 10 — to shoot because the family relies on game for food.

Last month, as an Obama win looked increasingly inevitable, there were 62,000 more background checks for gun purchases than in October 2007, a 25 percent increase. And they were up about 8 percent for the year as of Oct. 26, according to the FBI.

No data was available for gun purchases this week, but gun shops from suburban Virginia to the Rockies report record sales since Tuesday’s election. Read the rest of this entry »

Kenya maternities greet Obama and Michelle

Thursday Nov 6, 2008

Little Obamas and Michelles were coming to the world in maternities all over Kenya — one woman managing both at the same time with a pair of twins — as the party mood continued Wednesday in the nation where the US president-elect’s father was born.

In the New Nyanza provincial general hospital in Kisumu, the capital of the region which is home to Barack Obama’s ancestral village, Pauline Adhiambo gave birth to twins she named Obama and Michelle, an AFP correspondent reported. Read the rest of this entry »

Skinheads held over plot to kill Obama

Tuesday Oct 28, 2008

Two white supremacist skinheads were arrested in Tennessee over plans to go on a killing spree and eventually shoot Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, court documents showed on Monday.

Daniel Cowart and Paul Schlesselman were charged in a criminal complaint with making threats against a presidential candidate, illegal possession of a sawed-off shotgun and conspiracy to rob a gun dealer.

“We’re unsure of their ability or if they have the wherewithal to carry out any of their threats,” said a source close to the investigation.

The suspects met over the Internet about a month ago, said an affidavit filed by Brian Weaks, a special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Read the rest of this entry »

Kenya thieves target Obama granny

Thursday Sep 11, 2008

Kenyan police have stepped up security in the village of US presidential candidate Barack Obama’s grandmother, after a break-in at her home.

The police believe the thieves were trying to steal a solar panel from Sarah Hussein Obama’s tin roof.

Four people have been arrested and patrols increased around Alego-Kogello village, 60km (37 miles) from Kisumu.

The Illinois senator is a local hero in his father’s homeland, where a local beer has been named after him.

Correspondents say bottles of Senator are now referred to as “Obama” in honour of the Democratic party presidential hopeful. Read the rest of this entry »

US rival candidates try to woo Christians

Sunday Aug 17, 2008

US presidential hopefuls John McCain and Barack Obama have been trying to woo Christian voters at a televised religious forum in California.

The two men shared a stage for the first time since securing nomination.

Speaking first, Mr Obama defended his support for abortion and same-sex civil unions, but said marriage should only be between a man and a woman.

Republican John McCain affirmed he was pro-life and that he strongly supported preserving the status of marriage.

The forum, hosted by US pastor Rick Warren, was the senators’ last joint appearance before their official nomination as the candidates for November’s presidential election at their respective party conventions in a few weeks.

Three debates are scheduled to take place after the Democrat and Republican conventions.

White supremacists hope Obama win prompts backlash

Tuesday Aug 12, 2008

PEARL, Miss. (AP) — They’re not exactly rooting for Barack Obama, but prominent white supremacists anticipate a boost to their cause if he becomes the first black president. His election, they say, would trigger a backlash — whites rising up, a revolution of sorts — that they think is long overdue.

He’d be a “visual aid,” says former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, in trying to bring others around to their view that whites have lost control of America. Obama’s election, says another, would jar whites into action, writing letters, handing out pamphlets rather than sitting around complaining.

While most Americans have little or no direct contact with white supremacists, organizations such as the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center keep close tabs; the law center estimates some 200,000 people nationwide are active in such groups. These observers think the prospect of a white revolution is fantasy.
